4 Being non-judgemental

‘They reassured me in my darkest moments and allowed me to explore the complex emotions surrounding this part of my life.’

Julia’s story highlights this characteristic as being a particularly positive aspect of the social worker. She needed to be able to explore issues and feelings with honesty, confronting difficult emotions, ‘taking a huge step into an emotional arena I had not visited before’. She describes how she was able to move from wanting to please the social worker, saying the right thing, to a position where she was freed up to talk frankly, knowing she would not be judged. It is perhaps a testimony to the depth of Julia’s development that she writes so openly and with such a sense of calm about the ultimate rejection by her birth mother.
